14U
If there are more players that come to tryouts than teams formed, these players will have an option to play baseball either in a Babe Ruth or Willy Mays league. Any players that this applies to will be contacted about this after the March 17th tryouts.
15U
15U teams will be formed later so tryouts will not be in March. Details will be added to website as they become available.
Please arrive 15 minutes before the start time.
* NOTE: If we can't get outside for the 10U - 13U Tryout Date #2, the tryouts will be held inside at Sartell High School.
2012 Travel Tryout Process
In 2012, the goal is to have 1-2 travel teams formed at ages 10-13. Each team will have 11-12 players.
Please see the Playing Up Rules for Travel Teams page for more info on our association's rules on playing up.
The evaluations will be done completely by a group of independent evaluators. These evaluators have background in playing/coaching baseball at the high school/college/amateur level. All players will be given a score (100 pts. Possible) based upon the following criteria:
- Infield grounders - fielding form / throwing form/ arm strength (20%) 20 pts. possible
- Fly balls - catching form / throwing form/ arm strength (20%) 20 pts. possible
- Hitting swing form/ bat speed / contact (40%) 40 pts. possible
- Running - timed run of 90 feet (10%) 10 pts. possible
- Pitching - pitching form / accuracy / speed (10%) 10 pts. Possible
NOTE: All indoor evaluations are closed to spectators.
After the first day of tryouts are completed, 8 players will be selected for the AAA for each age level (10U-13U). Players not selected for the AAA team at tryout #1 can come back for a 2nd day of tryouts on March 24th. Final team selections (3-4 more players) will be made after the second day of tryouts.
For an age level with a AAA and a AA team, the next 8 players evaluated from tryout #1 will automatically be placed on the AA team. Final team selections for the AA team would be made following tryout #2.
Any registered players not making a travel team will automatically be registered into their corresponding Willy Mays league based on their current grade.
Tryouts Q & A
What should my son bring to tryouts?
Your child should bring dry shoes, a glove, a bat (if they have one), and a t-shirt (no jerseys or shirts from previous travel teams, please).
What is the cost of tryouts?
If your child is registered for baseball, tryouts are FREE. If you do not register before tryouts, there is a $10 tryout fee. Players must be registered by Friday, March 9th for free tryouts. Regisrations will not be done at SJU.
What if your child cannot make the March 10th tryout?
They must come to the March 24th tryout to be considered for the AAA or AA team.
What if your child cannot make the March 24th tryout?
They will be notified if they are in the top 8 for the AAA team. They will also be notified if they are guaranteed a spot on the AA roster (evaluated 9-16). They may still be picked for the AAA team if they are not present at tryout #2 based on tryout #1 evaluations.
Coaching Travel Baseball
If you would like to be a head coach of a Gopher State travel baseball team, you need to fill out an application. Go to the "Coaching" tab on the home page for more information.
Review Process
Sartell Area Youth Baseball keeps all tryout forms as well as the overall ratings of all participants in each age group. If you have specific questions on the tryouts, please feel free to write to the baseball board to request a review of your child's tryout. They will not be able to compare their scores to other players.
Please contact the Sartell Area Youth Baseball tryout coordinator, Rob Notsch (notsch18@hotmail.com), for any questions related to the tryout process.
